Every child we serve leaves a mark on our hearts. These are a few of their stories.
Born prematurely at 24 weeks, Ashton spent his first 303 days in the hospital before finally coming home — trach and g-tube in place, requiring round-the-clock expert care. When few home health agencies had nurses available, Truly Pediatric Home Care stepped in, pairing Ashton with a team of nurses who would become like family.
For over three years, Ashton's nursing team has provided not just medical care, but unwavering love and encouragement. They've supported him through surgeries, illnesses, and countless milestones: rolling over, walking, speaking his first words, learning ASL signs, and starting preschool. His nurses have been by his side every step, joining him for park exercise, craft time, and even dance parties to his favorite TV theme songs.
When Ashton faced serious airway complications in summer 2025, his Truly nurses were laser-focused on his stability, even volunteering their time during hospital stays so his parents could rest. It's this level of dedication that makes Truly different — and why the Halwes family has never once considered leaving.
“The quality of nurses that Truly has provided for us has been an amazing blessing. Ashton has been not only cared for medically by our nurses, but loved and encouraged to thrive. We’ve been with Truly for a little over 3 years now, and we’ve never had a desire or reason to leave.”
— Stephen and Kristian Halwes
Truly Pediatric Home Care was inspired and established in honor of Austin. Marchelle Hopson cared for Austin in his home for several years. An unbreakable bond was established and became the substance used to accelerate a fire within — to meet the community’s need for pediatric home nursing services.
“Son although you cannot be with me we are truly never apart. Until the final breath I take, you’ll be living in my heart.”
— Niki Carson, Austin’s Mother
This is Devon. He has cerebral palsy and is on a ventilator. Marchelle has been his home health nurse for the last 5 years. When Devon’s grandmother learned she had a terminal illness, her deepest wish was to see him baptized. Our team made that moment possible — a testament to the kind of care that goes beyond clinical skill and into the heart of a family.
The care I provide is very personal and faith based. After many years of feeling overworked and undervalued, I asked God to renew my spirit and compassion for nursing. His answer was Finn.
Watching Finn grow and beat every odd has been one of the most extraordinary journeys of my career. I remember the first time we met — he was in respiratory distress, just discharged after an 18-month hospital stay. His oxygen saturations were dropping, his family was frightened. We removed a mucous plug from his trach, gave him a few breaths with an Ambu bag, and then — he let me hold him. As I held him, I prayed for him.
In that moment, I knew I was called to be his nurse. And I knew God was going to use Finn to restore others and prove that miracles still happen.
“We just wanted to thank you for ALL that you have done for Finn and our family. There isn’t a day that goes by that James or I aren’t saying ‘I love that woman.’ You are truly becoming a part of our family and we couldn’t be more appreciative. You are an absolute rock star!”
